Here at Made Possible Personal Training in Saint Petersburg, we love a good barbell. It’s a classic for a reason. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only tool worth using.
One of our go-to pieces of equipment, for both local and online training clients, is the trap bar.
And no, it’s not because it’s “better” than the barbell. It’s just different. And sometimes that difference makes all the difference, especially when your goal is strength that lasts.
What’s a Trap Bar?
If you’ve never used one, a trap bar (also called a hex bar) is a large, hexagon-shaped bar you stand inside of. The handles are neutral, which means your palms face each other, and it can be loaded with plates just like a regular barbell.
Sounds simple. But the design changes everything about how the lift feels, in a good way.
Why We Use the Trap Bar at Made Possible
✅ You stand inside the bar, not behind it
This keeps the weight centered with your body instead of out in front. That shift reduces the strain on your low back and makes it easier to stay balanced and in control.
✅ It’s easier to learn and coach
For our personal training clients in Saint Pete and our online athletes training at home, the trap bar makes the hinge pattern more accessible. It’s especially great for beginners, tall lifters, or anyone who struggles with traditional deadlift form.
✅ You can move more weight, more powerfully
Trap bar lifts allow for more force and speed because the setup is more forgiving. That means you can build strength and athletic power without beating up your joints.
✅ It’s joint-friendly
The neutral grip and higher handles reduce stress on the spine, shoulders, and wrists. This makes it ideal for training around stiffness, recovering from previous injuries, or simply aging smart.
Local and Online Training That Puts the Right Tools in Your Hands
Whether you’re training in person with us in Saint Petersburg or following one of our custom remote programs, we choose tools and movements based on you. Not just what looks cool or heavy on Instagram.
Our local members train in a private, coach-led setting with access to specialty tools like trap bars, kettlebells, sleds, and more. Our online training clients get guided instruction on how to mimic those same movement patterns with what they have at home, or get recommendations on smart, affordable equipment to build out a home setup.
Training should feel good, not just hard. And part of our job is knowing when to push and when to pivot. The trap bar is one of the ways we do that.
Barbell or Trap Bar? Here’s the Answer
You don’t have to choose one or the other. Both belong in a well-rounded strength program. But if you’ve been struggling with form, dealing with back or wrist pain, or just looking to get stronger without feeling wrecked, the trap bar might be your best friend.
We’ll teach you when and how to use it, whether you’re training on our turf in Saint Pete or online with us from across the country.
