Why fitness headlines are driving you crazy

Why fitness headlines are driving you crazy

Every week there’s a new headline telling us what we “must” do: eat more protein, eat less protein, cut carbs, add carbs, fast for 16 hours, snack every 3.

No wonder so many people feel stuck, anxious, and second-guessing themselves.

The problem is that most of what you see in mainstream media isn’t based on long-term, evidence-based studies. It’s based on tiny trials, cherry-picked data, or just plain old marketing spin.

Alan Aragon, one of the most respected nutrition researchers, explains it like this: real science is slow, messy, and nuanced — but the internet wants quick, black-and-white answers. That gap between nuance and headlines is where confusion lives.

So how do you filter it?

  • Look for consistency across studies, not one-off results.
  • Ask: “Who benefits if I believe this?” If it’s someone selling a product, be cautious.
  • Remember: your body doesn’t change overnight from one food choice. It changes from patterns built over weeks, months, years.

When you start thinking this way, it’s freeing. You don’t have to chase every headline or panic every time a new diet trend pops up. You can focus on what’s been shown to work again and again: balanced nutrition, consistent training, and enough recovery.

That’s the real “secret” the media rarely tells you.
