If push-ups feel awkward or you’re not sure if you’re doing them right, you’re not alone. One of the most common mistakes we see at our personal training studio in St. Petersburg, Florida is hand placement.
Good news, there’s a simple trick that works every time. 💪
Here’s the Rule:
Set your hands just slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, and line them up with your mid-chest.
Not your shoulders. Not your head.
Right in line with your chest.
This position helps:
-
Protect your wrists and shoulders
-
Engage your core and lats properly
-
Build strength without stressing your joints
Try This Quick Cue:
Lie on the floor. As you press your palms into the ground, your elbows should point back at about a 45-degree angle from your sides — not flared out wide. That’s the sweet spot for power and safety.
We use this setup with everyone, from beginners to advanced clients, from senior training to custom strength programs.
If you’re training at home or working with a professional personal trainer in our studio, this small fix can make a big difference in how your push-ups feel and how much strength you build.
