Let’s be real. Push-ups look simple, but if you’ve ever tried to drop down and press back up, you know they’re anything but easy. Especially when you’re just starting out.
At MPPT in St. Petersburg, we work with people at every level. One of the most common goals we hear is this: “I want to be able to do a real push-up.” If that’s you, you’re in the right place.
Start With a Solid Foundation
You don’t need to muscle through your first push-up with brute strength. You need a plan, some patience, and smart progressions.
1. Master the plank
Push-ups are moving planks. If you can’t hold a strong high plank for 30 seconds, focus there first. Keep your core tight, glutes engaged, and body in a straight line from head to heels.
2. Use incline push-ups
Instead of dropping to your knees, raise your hands. Try push-ups on a wall, a bench, or a box. This allows you to practice the full range of motion without putting too much weight on your upper body too soon.
3. Practice slow lower-downs
Even if you can’t press up yet, try starting at the top of a push-up and lowering yourself slowly to the floor. Control the descent. It builds strength where you need it most.
4. Stay consistent
Improvement comes with repetition. Include push-up progressions in your weekly workouts and track your form, not just your reps.
Common Push-Up Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)
Letting your elbows flare
This can stress your shoulders. Keep your elbows tucked in at about a 45-degree angle. Think of forming an arrow shape with your arms, not a T.
Dropping your hips
If your midsection sags, your core isn’t doing its job. Engage your abs and glutes to keep your body aligned.
Leading with your head
Your nose should not be the first thing to hit the ground. Keep your neck neutral and lower your whole body together.
Rushing the movement
Going fast often leads to sloppy reps. Slow it down and focus on quality. Your strength will build faster this way.
Progress Takes Time
Not being able to do a push-up today does not mean you are weak. It means you are building strength. Every solid rep, every correction, every inch of control is progress.
At MPPT, we coach the details. We give you the tools to get stronger with good form. Whether you’re training in St. Petersburg, Largo, Gulfport, or Seminole, we’re here to help you crush your goals and feel good doing it.
