Join us in this lecture, were we discussed how to train a client that has had cancer or is going through chemo or radiation therapy for cancer. We talk about physiological and psychological differences in each cancer client, effects of radiation and chemo, special considerations for each type of cancer, cancer-related fatigue and how to deal with it, how to evaluate and assess a fitness program for a new cancer patient. We also discuss the 4 phases of exercise programming for cancer clients.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide
● 10 million people die from cancer each year
● 1⁄3 of cancer deaths are preventable
● A recent study found 90% of National Cancer Institute accredited hospitals did not have a link to cancer rehabilitation services
● Under utilization of rehab could be due to lack of awareness of benefits or overly concentrating on treating the disease without considering patient quality of life and functional challenges.
Cancer survivors can suffer from physiological toxicities affecting the cardiovascular, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, immune, gastrointestinal, and neuroendocrine systems.
Many survivors experience psychological decrements such as increased fatigue, increased depression, and decreased quality of life
Exercise directly attenuates the toxicities and decrements of cancer and its concurrent treatments
Lower risk of recurrences and improved survival compared to those who are inactive
ALL cancer diagnoses can benefit from a cancer exercise program:
